Installing a Preformed Pond

Step 1

The best method of easily and accurately installing a pre-formed pond is by creating an excavation that will embrace the maximum width and length of the pre-formed pond shape. It should also include the maximum depth of the pond.

Provision should also be made for the pond to be adjusted within the hole and an allowance to permit back-filling. The excavation should also be deep enough to allow for the spreading of a 3 or 4cm layer of sand on the bottom on which to cushion the pre-formed pond shape.

Step 2

Once the excavation has been completed, position the pre-formed pond. Where there are marginal shelves or shallows, the shape can be propped up on bricks. Make sure that the pond is level, but just beneath the ground level, as during back-filling it is inevitable that it will rise a little. Loose bricks can provide very useful firm support and can be left in place.

Step 3

Sand or fine gravel provides the best back-filling material. If excavated soil is of such a texture that it will flow evenly around the pond, it is too good for such a purpose. It is much better utilised for planting purposes elsewhere in the garden. Add back-filling evenly or else the pond shape may twist or tilt. Walk around the pond, systematically pouring sand or fine gravel into the space between the moulding and sides of the excavation. Maintain a constant check on the levels across and along the pond structure to ensure that they remain true.

Step 4

Vacuum-formed plastic ponds are very flexible and will buckle during the back-filling process unless water is added at the same time. Add water as back-filling takes place, making sure that the level of water within the pond keeps pace with the back-filling. Too much back-filling will cause inward buckling; too much water will result in bulging outwards. As the process continues, make sure that the pond remains level from side to side and end to end.
