The Chinese Symbol Tsukubai is inscribed with a famous poem from the Ry¨an-ji temple in Kyoto. The kanji written on the tsukubai reads, "what one has is all one needs", and is meant to reinforce the basic anti-materialistic teachings of Buddhism.
The symbols are insignificant when read alone, but if read in combination with ¿Ú (kuchi) in the centre of the bowl they become Îá, Ψ, ×ã, Öª. This translates as "I only know plenty" (Îá = ware = I, Ψ = tada = only, ×ã = taru = plenty, Öª = shiru = know).
Note: This Tsukubai is hand carved from natural granite so variations and imperfections may occur.
